Are you your own worst enemy? Learn how to harness the power of positive thinking.
A.J. Garcia, MA, LMFT, QCS
We all remember that motivational children’s story about the little engine that could. The little engine who never gave up, who beat the odds and the naysayers, who succeeded with the well-known chant, “I think I can, I think I can”.
Yet, somewhere along the way, it seems that the important life lesson learned in childhood got wiped away through maturation. We easily forget the power of “I think I can” and too often fall victim to “I know I can’t”.
The strength of the self-fulfilling prophecy, the tendency for us to unknowingly or unintentionally cause our expectations to come true, is revealed consistently in our lives.
How many times have you told yourself you were going to fail, then ended up failing because you didn’t put the needed effort into the preparation? How often have you thought you weren’t liked, then watched as your social insecurities transform your great communication skills into something resembling a social train wreck? These are examples of the self-fulfilling prophecy at work.
While we all know too well the nightmarish powers of negative thinking, there is good news! You can use the self-fulfilling prophecy to your advantage.
You have the ability to harness the power of positive thinking.
You can take a cue from The Little Engine and tell yourself affirmative messages. You can boost your confidence and courage, aiding you in reaching goals you never thought possible.
Positive thinking alone isn’t a magic cure. It won’t solve all your problems or do the work for you. But a change in attitude will give you the motivation and belief needed for you to put the work in to shift the odds in your favor.
You can manifest the reality you want, instead of unintentionally creating the undesirable.
It’s time to be your own biggest fan. It’s time to encourage yourself. It’s time to act as if you’re confident and push yourself toward making your dreams a reality.
