I Think I Can, I Think I Can…

Confidence, Mental Health, Mindset, Personal Growth

Are you your own worst enemy? Learn how to harness the power of positive thinking.

We all remember that motivational children’s story about the little engine that could. The little engine who never gave up, who beat the odds and the naysayers, who succeeded with the well-known chant, “I think I can, I think I can”.

Yet, somewhere along the way, it seems that the important life lesson learned in childhood got wiped away through maturation. We easily forget the power of “I think I can” and too often fall victim to “I know I can’t”.

The strength of the self-fulfilling prophecy, the tendency for us to unknowingly or unintentionally cause our expectations to come true, is revealed consistently in our lives.

How many times have you told yourself you were going to fail, then ended up failing because you didn’t put the needed effort into the preparation? How often have you thought you weren’t liked, then watched as your social insecurities transform your great communication skills into something resembling a social train wreck? These are examples of the self-fulfilling prophecy at work.

While we all know too well the nightmarish powers of negative thinking, there is good news! You can use the self-fulfilling prophecy to your advantage.

You have the ability to harness the power of positive thinking.

You can take a cue from The Little Engine and start paying attention to what you’re telling yourself. Instead of automatically assuming you can’t, begin questioning that conclusion. Remind yourself of what you’re capable of, what you’ve already overcome, and what you can choose to do next. This can boost your confidence and courage, aiding you in reaching goals you never thought possible.

Positive thinking alone isn’t a magic cure. It won’t solve all your problems or do the work for you. But a change in attitude will give you the motivation and belief needed for you to put the work in to shift the odds in your favor.

You can manifest the reality you want, instead of unintentionally creating the undesirable. Your thoughts don’t determine your reality, but they can influence what you do within it. Changing the way you think can change the choices you make, the risks you’re willing to take, and the effort you’re willing to give.

It’s time to be your own biggest fan. It’s time to encourage yourself. It’s time to act as if you’re confident and push yourself toward making your dreams a reality. Confidence doesn’t require knowing you’ll succeed. Sometimes it means believing you’re capable of trying, learning, adjusting, and continuing forward.

Connect with purpose. Live with confidence.

What You Tell Yourself Matters

The thoughts running through your mind can influence how you approach challenges, relationships, opportunities, and yourself. Learning to question negative assumptions and develop a more realistic perspective can help you make choices based on what matters to you instead of what fear tells you is possible.

At Thrive Counseling, individual counseling can help you recognize negative thought patterns, strengthen your confidence, and develop practical ways to approach challenges differently. If anxiety and overthinking are contributing to self-doubt, anxiety counseling can also help you question anxious assumptions and respond with greater confidence.

Thrive Counseling provides virtual individual and anxiety counseling throughout Florida (Orlando, Lake Nona, Winter Park, Windermere) and Georgia (Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, Roswell), with online counseling also available in New Jersey (Princeton, Summit) and South Carolina (Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island).
