We spend the bulk of our time talking to or with other people. Sometimes we feel confident and successful in our interactions, while other moments we walk away with a sense of defeat, confusion, or frustration. What went wrong? Learning better communication skills, including how to listen and understand, can change the way we connect with others. What can you do to make yourself a better communicator?
It’s common knowledge that good communication is necessary for a healthy relationship with a friend, family member, or romantic partner. Also for a boss, coworker, or customer. What is less common, however, is knowing how to communicate well in each of these cases.
Many people think that communication is how you talk with another. While that’s true, speaking isn’t the only facet of having healthy communication. What we say nonverbally speaks volumes. Our facial expressions, gestures, and posture all broadcast our intent and attention (or lack thereof).
The most important, and most undervalued, aspect of good communication isn’t what you’re conveying at all, it’s what is being shared with you. Listening, truly hearing another, is the game changer. When you listen to understand, you increase your ability to meaningfully connect. This becomes especially important in marriage, where communication problems can turn small misunderstandings into recurring patterns of conflict or disconnection.
Far too many people listen only to what they think is being said, thereby missing all that is being shared. Instead, I encourage you to be curious. Set your personal filter aside, ask for clarification, and seek to understand. Be slow to speak and quick to listen. Learn what the other is really saying. Once you do, you’ll be better able to respond and connect.
By embracing active listening, you open the door to deeper, more meaningful relationships. The effort you put into truly hearing and understanding others transforms your interactions from mere exchanges of words to genuine connections. This skill not only enhances your personal relationships but also enriches your professional ones, paving the way for improved collaboration and mutual respect.

Better Communication Can Change Your Relationships
Communication problems don’t always come from having the wrong thing to say. Sometimes we’re responding before we understand, assuming we know what someone means, or repeating patterns that have become so familiar we don’t recognize them anymore. Learning to communicate differently can change what happens between you.
At Thrive Counseling, we help individuals strengthen communication skills and understand the patterns affecting their relationships. Through couples counseling, marriage counseling, and marriage therapy, we also help couples communicate more clearly, navigate recurring conflict, and reconnect when conversations have started creating more distance than understanding.
Thrive Counseling provides virtual counseling and online marriage counseling throughout Florida (Orlando, Lake Nona, Winter Park, Winter Garden) and Georgia (Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs), with services also available in New Jersey (Princeton, Summit) and South Carolina (Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island).
If communication has become a source of frustration in your relationship, schedule a consultation. We’ll help you understand the patterns getting in the way and develop practical skills for communicating with greater clarity and confidence.
