Self-Care and Self-Love: More Than Just a Trend

Mental Health, Mindset, Personal Growth, Self-Care

Self-care is not about following trends or creating the perfect routine. It’s about learning what helps you feel supported, balanced, and valued.

Daniela Bigott, MS, LMFT

At Thrive Counseling, we often hear clients say they know self-care is important, but they are not always sure what it looks like for them. Others tell me they have tried self-care activities that work for someone else but leave them feeling frustrated or unchanged. The truth is that self-care and self-love are deeply personal.
Self-Love Starts With How You Speak to Yourself

Many of us are kinder to others than we are to ourselves.

Pay attention to your inner dialogue:
• Would you speak to a friend this way?
• Are you holding yourself to unrealistic expectations?
• Can you offer yourself the same compassion you give others?

Self-love is about treating yourself with kindness, especially when things are difficult.
Rest Is a Form of Self-Care

We live in a culture that often celebrates being busy. As a result, many people feel guilty when they slow down.

The reality is that rest is productive.

Rest can help:
• Improve focus and concentration
• Reduce stress and burnout
• Support emotional well-being
• Increase energy and motivation

You do not have to earn rest. Taking care of yourself is reason enough.
Small Acts Matter

Self-care does not have to be expensive, time-consuming, or elaborate.

Sometimes self-care looks like:
• Drinking a glass of water
• Taking a few deep breaths
• Stepping outside for fresh air
• Saying no to an extra commitment
• Going to bed a little earlier

Small choices add up over time.
Remember That You Matter Too

Many people spend so much time caring for others that they forget to care for themselves.

Self-love means recognizing that:
• Your needs matter
• Your feelings matter
• Your well-being matters

Taking care of yourself allows you to show up more fully in the areas of life that matter most.
A Few Ways to Practice Self-Care and Self-Love This Week

  • Check in with yourself and ask what you need today.
  •  Replace one self-critical thought with a kinder one.
  • Give yourself permission to rest without guilt.
  • Remember that caring for yourself is an investment, not a luxury.
If you are struggling to prioritize yourself or unsure what self-care looks like for your unique needs, you are not alone.

At Thrive Counseling, we believe that self-care and self-love are essential parts of emotional well-being.
